#4 SALSA THE MOVIE – FANIA ALL STARS (LIVE AT THE YANKEE STADIUM)

Documentary from the New York Latin scene of the early 70s. An important work that sought to define the term “salsa” by tracing the evolution of Latin music in America during the 20th century. Based around a performance by the Fania All Stars at Yankee Stadium — but also features important commentary, images, and thoughts on the music — plus an expanded roster of performers that includes Celia Cruz, Manu Dibango, Billy Cobham, Jorge Santana, and El Gran Combo — in addition to Fania All-Stars like Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Mongo Santamaria, and Larry Harlow. It includes versions of “Soul Makossa”, “El Raton”, “Congo Bongo”, “Mi Debilidad”, and “Julia” — and the film runs for over 80 minutes in length, color, in English with Spanish subtitles.
